💎 CULTURAL GEMS
The Odeon of Herodes Atticus

Greece is
Nestled beneath the shadow of the Acropolis, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus is Athens’ most iconic open-air theater—and perhaps its most dramatic comeback story.
Built in 161 AD by the wealthy Roman benefactor Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife Regilla, the amphitheater could seat up to 5,000 spectators and hosted music and theater performances in lavish Roman style. After being buried in ruins for centuries following its destruction in 267 AD, it was only fully restored in the 1950s—just in time for Maria Callas to belt arias under the stars.
Few know that beneath the marble seats lie ancient water channels used to cool the summer air (nature’s original air-conditioning), or that the original cedar roof—rare for such structures—made the acoustics so precise you could hear a whisper from the stage.

📌 RECS

While in Serifos, why don’t you:
✅ Climb to Chora at sunset - Serifos’ hilltop capital looks like a sugar-cube fortress clinging to rock. The view from the church of Agios Konstantinos is Aegean magic.
✅ Explore the abandoned mines at Kalo Livadi - A crumbling Neo-classical building overlooking a red-tinted sea. It’s eerie, historical and a rare glimpse of industrial-era Greece.
That’s your cultural snack pack for the week—share it with a cousin, impress a Greek dad, or just use it to win trivia night.
On a more serious note: our thoughts are with everyone in Chios affected by the wildfires. Summer’s not all sun and ouzo, and we’re sending love.
Catch you next week. 🧿 Stay Greek. [email protected]
