🌀Corfu Hidden Gems, Patra Castle, Olympus Festival and Earthquakes
The Greek Talk: Your weekly escape to Greece—no airport trauma involved.

Hi Greek Talkers!
This week we’ve got castles reopening, fines flying, seismic rumbles and Corfu flexing. But first, meet our Greek of the Week - living proof that Greeks don’t just do drama, we do excellence too 😎
And because we enjoy a little chaos with our culture, get ready: next week we are unleashing a brand new section called the Greek Bureaucracy Obstacle Course. It’s like the Olympics, but with more photocopies, less clarity on timing and one stamp to rule them all. May the odds be ever in your favor 🧿
Let’s dive in. ☕🤿🇬🇷

👤 GREEK OF THE WEEK
Welcome to our new segment: Greek of the Week!
Here we will spotlight a Greek doing hard, cool, ridiculous or deeply relatable things in the world. Sometimes they are artists. Sometimes they are scientists. Sometimes they are just trying to find decent baklava in Berlin.
But here is the twist:
This isn’t just a profile. It’s a connection point. If something in their story resonates - career-wise, culturally, spiritually - you can actually reach out.
We’re building a living, breathing, Greek network. Just good people and good vibes.
First up:
🇺🇲 🇬🇷 Andrew Prokos

Andrew is a fine art and architecture photographer who lives in New York, travels to Greece often (those photos!!) and is in the middle of getting his Greek passport (we empathize).
How Greek is your fridge?
100% Greek. Whenever I go to Greece I bring back a lot of things including chamomile and oregano, but US customs is very adept at confiscating food.
What do you miss most about Greece? And what don’t you miss at all?
The food, the climate, the sea, the landscape, the smell of the countryside. Greeks are pretty direct and I appreciate that. What I don’t miss is the bureaucracy!
What’s a Greek value that shapes how you do business?
Be curious, open-minded and respect other cultures. Coming from a culture with ancient roots has made me fascinated with other cultures, especially ones that have been around a while. I try to respect others and I think it comes across.
What Greek tradition do you still keep alive?
#1 Respect your elders #2 Filoxenia
Kalamata or green olives (be honest)
Kalamata, followed by green olives!
✉️ Want to connect with Andrew?
Whether you’re curious about Andrew’s work, want to ask him a question or are looking for a foot in the door, you can reach him directly at his website or through instagram @andrewprokos — or email us and we’ll pass it along (no spam, pinky swear).
🧿 And if you’d like to be featured — or nominate someone amazing — just email us: [email protected]
💎 CULTURAL GEMS
🛡️ Patras Castle just unlocked two new bastions - because every good fortress deserves a renovation montage.
Two newly restored sections of the Patra Castle, dating back to the Byzantine era, are now open to the public, offering panoramic views and a stroll through centuries of layered Greek history.

Take the bite out of rising vet costs with pet insurance
Veterinarians across the country have reported pressure from corporate managers to prioritize profit. This incentivized higher patient turnover, increased testing, and upselling services. Pet insurance could help you offset some of these rising costs, with some providing up to 90% reimbursement.
🧳 TRAVEL NEWS

Among the most popular must-dos in Corfu are a visit to the Old Town, the Achilleion Palace, the famous Paleokastritsa beach and a stroll down Liston Promenade. But this is The Greek Talk, so here are a few hidden gems:

🧑🍳 RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Sofrito - Corfu’s Saucy Little Secret
Sofrito is Corfu’s signature dish. Slow-cooked slices of beef simmered in white wine, garlic, parsley and vinegar - basically the holy quarter of Greek flavors. It will make your kitchen smell like a taverna. Serve it with fries, mashed potatoes or just a fork.

💡 INSPIRATION
Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.
😎 GREEK FYI
⛰️ Although most people associate Greece with beaches and islands, 80% of the country is mountainous, making it one of the most mountainous countries in Europe.

📌 RECS

Ultra-Local Gems in Corfu
✅ Nymphes Waterfalls - A waterfall in a village named after actual nymphs? Yes please!
✅ Kouloura Cove - a tiny bay that looks like someone hand-painted it for a Corfu postcard. It’s peaceful, perfect and worth the detour.
That’s it for now - consider yourself updated, entertained and mildly more cultured. If you loved this issue, forward it to your siblings/cousins/koumbaroi or that one friend who thinks Corfu is a Mamma Mia song. Shoutout to the reader that sends us a photo from Corfu! Catch you next week for more news, drama, island deep dives and Greek paperwork 😮💨 Stay Greek. [email protected]
