Hi Greek Talkers!

A.C. wrote in to say she enjoys the diaspora food write-ups, the ones about Greek food in places like Adelaide. A.C., noted. There’s a whole newsletter’s worth of Greek bakeries in cities that have never seen a Greek summer, and we’ll keep finding them.

This week we have a Greek gold medal in AirBadminton, a new supercomputer, another chapter in the Parthenon Sculptures saga, and a Greek-American scientist whose career started with a microscope she got for Christmas.

We’re also heading to Lesvos, where the trees are 18 million years old, and asking a surprisingly complicated question: when did people actually start thinking of themselves as Greek?

Let’s dive in. ☕🤿🇬🇷

Is Social Media Hurting Your Child? Your Family May Qualify

Many parents blamed themselves, or their kids, for the hours lost to the feed. But legal claims allege social media companies built in psychological triggers on purpose: intermittent rewards, endless scrolling, toxic social comparison, and recommendation engines that pull kids into content rabbit holes.

Now families are filing legal claims against platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

You may be eligible if:

  • Excessive social media use started under age 18

  • There was a diagnosis of an eating disorder, severe anxiety, depression, or self-harm

ClaimsHero checks whether you qualify for a claim and gets your family justice. Nothing upfront. We only get paid if your claim is successful.

🇬🇷 WHAT’S NEW IN GREECE

🏸 Greece won European gold in AirBadminton at Ancient Olympia, where clearly the sporting program has expanded considerably since 776 BC. 👏 🇬🇷

More news from Greece

⚽ England ended Greece’s World Cup hopes 5-0, so we are filing this under “excellent experience, unfortunate scoreline.” 😢

🤖 Greece unveiled Daedalus, an €58.9 million supercomputer ranked 31st in the world. This should have enough supercomputing power to process the August ferry schedule.

🏛️ We apparently reached shared custody status as The British Museum is proposing that the Parthenon marbles “rotate” between Athens and London. 😳

🧬 Greek businesses can get up to €600,000 for deep-tech training, provided they have 100 employees and something more ambitious in mind than Excel.

🌎 WHAT’S NEW OUTSIDE OF GREECE

🔬 Constadina Arvanitis got a microscope for Christmas as a child and now runs Northwestern’s advanced microscopy center, so that gift escalated nicely.

More news from outside of Greece

🇬🇷 More than 200 people launched THI’s New Leaders program in Melbourne, bringing young Greek Australians together before LinkedIn gets all the credit.

🇦🇺 Victorian students marked the Australians who fought in Greece during WWII, making sure a shared history survives beyond the people who lived it.

📚 More than 100 women gathered in Melbourne to digitize Greek community archives (and somehow also produced 400 biscuits).

Got a burning question about Greek culture, diaspora life, or that family tradition nobody can explain?

💌 Send it to [email protected] - your question might become next week's featured Q&A.

💎 CULTURAL GEMS

🏛️ Even the Ancient Greeks Had a Complicated Answer to “Where Are You From?

Ask a Greek abroad where they are from and you may get three answers before you get the real one.

“Greece.”

“New York.”

“My family is from Kalamata.”

Then, five minutes later, you learn that the village is actually outside Kalamata, one grandparent was from somewhere else entirely, and nobody agrees on which answer counts.

Jonathan Hall, a classicist who has spent much of his career studying Greek identity in antiquity, argues that this layered answer would have made perfect sense to the ancient Greeks too. People identified with their family, their city, their region, their religious community and sometimes with a broader Greek identity, but “Greek” was not necessarily the first or most important label in every situation.

Even the word Hellenes did not always mean all Greeks. In Homer, it refers to a much smaller group, and the broader use of the term seems to have developed gradually.

One of the stranger examples involves Alexander I of Macedon, an ancestor of Alexander the Great. According to Herodotus, when he wanted to compete in the Olympic Games, other competitors objected that he was not Greek, so he had to establish that his royal family traced its ancestry back to Argos before he was allowed to take part.

A stronger shared Greek identity became more useful when Greeks had to define themselves against outsiders, particularly during the Persian Wars, but even then the unity was limited. Hundreds of Greek city-states existed, only a fraction joined the coalition against Persia, and not long afterward Athens and Sparta were busy fighting each other.

So the ancient answer to “Where are you from?” may not have been very different from ours. It depended on who was asking, and how much time you had.

🧳 TRAVEL NEWS

🏖 Lesvos, Before There Were Greeks.

Western Lesvos does not look much like the Greece people usually picture. Around Sigri, the landscape gets drier and more volcanic, the green thins out, and then you start noticing what look like tree trunks coming out of the rock. Yes, they are tree trunks but they are also stone.

Around 18.5 million years ago, this part of the Aegean was covered by a subtropical forest. Volcanic eruptions buried the trees under ash and mud, and over time minerals replaced the organic material while preserving an extraordinary amount of detail, including bark, roots and growth rings. Some trunks are still standing where they grew.

It is hard to look at all of this without recalibrating your sense of Greek history. We are used to calling something ancient if it is 2,500 years old. At Lesvos’ Petrified Forest, that barely gets you started.

The best place to begin is the Natural History Museum in Sigri, because otherwise you are basically walking around looking at very impressive rocks without fully understanding why they matter. From there you can visit the fossil parks nearby, including Bali-Alonia and Plaka, while Nissiopi, just offshore, has a marine fossil park that can be visited by boat when the weather and season cooperate.

And then stay in Sigri for a while. It is a small port town at the western end of the island, with a castle, a harbor and a completely different feel from the greener parts of Lesvos further east. So even though Greece usually gives you history in thousands of years, here it comes in millions.

🧑‍🍳 RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Sardeles Pastes, the Salted Sardines of Kalloni

The sardines from the gulf of Kalloni on Lesvos are small, fat, and famous, and the island’s way with them is barely a recipe at all. Fresh sardines, layered in coarse salt for a few hours, then rinsed, boned, and dressed with olive oil, lemon, and a little oregano. No cooking as the salt does everything. They go on the table next to a glass of ouzo from Plomari, which is the other thing Lesvos is known for, and the two have been sold as a pair for about a century. Eat them with bread and don’t count them.

😎 GREEK FYI

🇬🇷 Officially the island is Lesvos but ask almost any Greek and they’ll say Mytilene, which is the name of the capital, and they’ll say it for the whole island, the airport, the ferry, and the relatives. Both are correct, and the locals switch between them mid-sentence.

😂 MYTHIC MEMES

@ripacos

That’s it for now. The British Museum offered to share, Greece declined, and a forest on Lesvos has been standing still for twenty million years without anyone offering it anything. Next week is OXI Day. We’ll be ready.
