The Greek Talk: Like Eurovision - dramatic, sparkly, and we are still mad about that year we totally should have won 🎤

In partnership with

Welcome to the Greek Talk—thanks for coming along for the ride.

We started this project to bring Greeks everywhere a little bit of home - whether you are waving a flag in London, yelling “Greece was robbed!” in Chicago, or just watching Eurovision with snacks and strong opinions in Thessaloniki.

Each week, we rather the stories that made us laugh, tear up, or question how that other country made it to the finals. No drama (except the fun kind), no 12-point scoring systems - just your weekly Greek dose, loud and proud.

Let’s dive in. 🤿🇬🇷

🇬🇷 WHAT’S NEW IN GREECE

🎤 🇬🇷 Turns out Greece’s Eurovision entry faced two things this year: European judgement… and a Finnish sauna that almost melted Klavdia’s vocal cords. GO GREECE!

🎨 Apparantly, Greek art in the new crypto - except this time, it’s actually real, has history, and many of your relatives already claim they “could’ve painted that".”

🔥 Oh no. Greece’s emissions just hit a 3-year high—turns out we’re not just burning fossil gas, we’re burning records too.

🧳 TRAVEL NEWS

⛱️ Greece is the only place where “getting lost” is a solid strategy.

Whether you are chasing Homeric legends or just debating sand vs pebbles, these 12 islands are among the best for 2025 and a masterclass in doing nothing - beautifully. Say hello to Ikaria, Kythera and Samothrace.

⛰️ If beach and islanding is not your thing, head over to Arcadia, where WiFi fears to roam, goats outnumber people, and your only traffic jam is a shepherd giving side-eye to your rental car.

🌟 GREEK STARS

Klavdia Papadopoulou - just Klavdia to fans - is a 22-year-old vocal powerhouse from Aspropyrgos, with Pontic roots and pipes that first wowed Greece at 14 on Greece’s Got Talent.

A year later, she made it to The Voice finals, mentored by none other than Eurovision queen Helena Paparizou. Fast-forward to 2025 and Klavdia is representing Greece at Eurovision in Basel with “Asteromáta” (“Starry Eyes”), a haunting, modern-ethnic anthem inspired by her family’s journey of displacement.

📌 RECS

This week’s recs? Greek Eurovision bangers we’ll never emotionally recover from:

  1. Helena Paparizou – "My Number One" (2005). The moment Greece peaked — musically, politically, spiritually. The only time the entire country agreed on anything. Still gets played at weddings, name days, and anywhere there's a microphone and feelings.

  2. Sakis Rouvas – “Shake It” (2004). Sakis didn’t just sing — he hip-thrusted his way into Eurovision history. Greece came in 3rd, but those abs won 1st place in everyone’s hearts.

  3. Kalomira – "Secret Combination" (2008). Barbie meets bouzouki in this glitter-fueled bop. Didn’t win, but ask any millennial Greek and they know the dance.

  4. Paschalis, Marianna, Robert & Bessy – “Mathima Solfege” (1977). It’s four people yelling music theory terms in harmony — and somehow it works. Think: ABBA meets your overly enthusiastic conservatory professor. Greece didn’t place high, but we absolutely placed it in our cultural DNA

That’s it for now. If you end up turning your kitchen/patio into a Eurovision stage - we want proof. Extra points for wind machines and complicated choreography. [email protected]
